Holiday TV DVD Guide 2009

Dexter DVDYou know those people who are always saying there's nothing worth watching on TV? They clearly haven't taken a look at our TV-on-DVD holiday gift guide list, because 2009 has been packed with DVD releases of TV series and specials that would make anyone save the grinchiest Grinch sit up and take notice.

Peruse the lineup for yourself (and be prepared to add a few boxed sets to your own wish list).

NBC Schedules 'The Sing-Off,' 'SNL' Christmas Special

NBC is getting into the holiday spirit the old fashioned way: with a week of caroling.

Yes, Variety reports that NBC has announced their schedule for December and it includes four days of their new a capella competition 'The Sing-Off'. The show, which borrows liberally from Fox's surprise smash hit 'Glee' by featuring a capella performances of popular pop tunes, will roll out with a series of two-hour specials beginning Mon., Dec. 14 and culminating in a grand finale a week later on Dec. 21.

'Star Wars' Holiday Special - This IS the 1978 Variety Show You're Looking For

Star Wars Holiday SpecialA 'Star Wars' variety show, starring characters named "Itchy" and "Lumpy?" An inexplicable musical number by none other than the late Bea Arthur? And since when did the 'Star Wars' universe expand to encompass Harvey Korman and Art Carney? One wouldn't be too far off the mark to accuse the creators of 'The Star Wars Holiday Special' of having been drunk on Jawa Juice when they made this legendarily bad (aka, awesome) slice of holiday entertainment.

Starring the entire "Star Wars" cast with the exception of Alec Guinness, the 1978 special was produced with the intent of capitalizing on 'Star Wars' mania. Instead, it set a low-water mark for bizarre television. The plot, such as it is, involves Chewbacca rushing home to his home planet of Kashyyyk to celebrate "Life Day," the Wookie equivalent of Christmas.

Carrie Underwood vs. Jennifer Hudson: Who Will Host the Best Holiday Special?

Carrie Underwood Jennifer Hudson Christmas'American Idol''s Carrie Underwood has landed her very own holiday special, reports the Hollywood Reporter.

The two-hour telecast will air Dec. 7 on Fox, under the direction of 'So You Think You Can Dance' judges Adam Shankman and Nigel Lythgoe. For now, the show is being called 'Carrie Underwood: An All-Star Holiday Special.'

Carrie is one of two 'Idol' alums slated to appear in a holiday special this year. The other is season 3's Jennifer Hudson, who will star in ABC's recently announced 'Jennifer Hudson: I'll Be Home for Christmas,' airing sometime later this season (more on that here).

We're excited to watch both specials. But what we really want to know is: Whose will be better? Will J-Hud give another Oscar-winning performance? Or will Carrie steal her holiday thunder?

Jennifer Hudson to Star in ABC Christmas Special

Jennifer Hudson ChristmasThis year, Christmas will come a bit early for 'American Idol' alum Jennifer Hudson.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Oscar winner ('Dreamgirls') will star in the ABC special 'Jennifer Hudson: I'll Be Home for Christmas,' airing this December.

Hudson will travel to her hometown of Chicago to perform at various locations connected to her childhood, including her church and music academy. There, Hudson will recall some of her favorite holiday memories.
