In TreatmentWe're thrilled that HBO has renewed 'In Treatment' for a third season. In two seasons, it has proven to be one of the most compelling experiments in dramatic television. A lot of that has to do with the stellar -- and Emmy-nominated -- work by Gabriel Byrne, who plays psychotherapist Dr. Paul Weston.

The show was based closely on the Isreali series 'Be Tipul.' That program only lasted for two seasons, which means that season 3 of 'In Treatment' will be its first foray into wholly new territory. To this point, much of the dialogue, relationships and all of the patients were based on their Isreali counterparts, with minor variations. Now, the writers will be taxed with creating everything from scratch.

With that in mind, we decided to help out by scouring through the channels to find 10 television characters who desperately need treatment from Dr. Weston.

Recently, we were inspired by 'Parks and Recreation' to write a feature listing TV shows that overcame a rocky launch. Sadly, the reverse seems more common: shows that start strong but finish weak.

Our latest inspiration is the ongoing death spiral of 'Heroes.' (This week: Mohinder does something stupid! People's powers go awry at inopportune moments! Adrian Pasdar, pictured, looks like he'd rather be anywhere else!) Here's a once-inspired show that seems to be going down in flames after having run out of ideas.

Other times, shows peter out because of casting changes, bad writing or bizarre creative decisions. In each case, however, the audience feels betrayed and often deserts the show, leading to ratings death and what-went-wrong autopsies. Here's what went wrong on nine other good shows gone bad.

Wossamotta U? You didn't know that Thursday, Nov. 19, marks the 50th anniversary of all things Bullwinkle?

The dimwitted but beloved moose, along with flying squirrel pal Rocky, foes Boris and Natasha, 'Fractured Fairy Tales' and 'Mr. Peabody & Sherman,' debuted in 1959 on ABC's 'Rocky & His Friends,' a twice-a-week afternoon series that moved to primetime when it shifted to NBC and became 'The Bullwinkle Show' in 1961.

The series was created by Jay Ward, the U.C. Berkeley and Harvard grad who also created the Cap'n Crunch character. And though "moose and squir-rel," as baddies Boris and Natasha so often referred to them, are beloved today, Ward's daughter Tiffany Ward -- who was 11 when her dad created Bullwinkle and his buddies -- says the show wasn't a ratings smash during its original run.

On June 23, 2009, the trademark laugh of the greatest sidekick of all time was silenced as Ed McMahon floated up to the great sidekick couch on the sky. While Publisher's Clearing House commercials and 'Star Search' reruns will never be the same, the good news is that McMahon, who rose up in the wake of some pretty stellar sidekicks himself, set the bar high for those to follow.

Perhaps he set it too high, though, as newcomers to the talk show field like Jimmy Fallon and Craig Ferguson have chosen to fly solo on their talk shows. And that's a shame. Like wine in a box and BBC America series, these straight men of the chat circuit are all too often underappreciated and overshadowed but consistently, inconspicuously deliver the goods.

Legacy Perez and his amazing abs were the star at this week's taping of 'So You Think You Can Dance.' The break dancer went shirtless for a dynamic paso doble that had the judges and the studio audience oohing and aahing.

Legacy's six-pack physique got double exposure, not that any one was complaining, after he and partner Kathryn McCormick had to strike the same provocative pose twice for a retake of their dance's finale. The reason for the retake? So Nigel Lythgoe could make a more risqué joke based on Legacy's dance role as a Navy admiral.

Riffing on rehearsal footage where Legacy's pants split, Lythgoe asked if he wasn't, perhaps, a rear admiral, a ribald remark that didn't make the final cut. Judge Adam Shankman's off-the-cuff joke, "I know a lot of people who'd like to sign up for that Navy!" was aired instead.

What If God Were the SunNobody quite does movies like Lifetime.

We come to celebrate Lifetime movies, not bury them. We love our Lifetime movies, because we love watching as the placid veneer of suburbia is invariably shattered in each one. On Lifetime, a typical soccer mom will find herself in an unusual or dangerous -- or unusually dangerous -- situation, like tied up in the trunk of a car, or go-go dancing at the local sleaze-o-rama.

And, of course, the titles are priceless. Where else can you watch movies like the classic Kirsten Dunst drama '15 and Pregnant,' or 'Single White Female 2: The Psycho'? Not on NBC, that's for sure.

Joss Whedon has become something of a tortured artist since 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' ended its highly successful seven-season run in 2003. Since Sunnydale was destroyed and 'Angel' got pulled right when it was finding its own identity post-'Buffy,' Whedon has yet to find another long-running hit. It's still hard to believe that a show as great as 'Firefly' only lasted one season!

Whedon's bad luck continues with the recent announcement that Fox is pulling the plug on 'Dollhouse,' a series that had enough of a following -- and potential -- to warrant another season. Would 'Dollhouse' have really hit its stride further down the road? We'll never know. Here are some other sci-fi television series that met their makers too soon.
