Attention mediums and psychics: Make sure 'Ghost Hunters Academy' hosts Steve Gonsalves and Dave Tango are aware of your powers before you start searching for spooks.Just ask Susan, a raven-haired woman who was featured on the show's debut episode, which aired last week on Syfy.
"She hid it from us, and didn't tell and we found out because she ran out of a place,'' said Gonsalves of an "incident" at Ft. Mifflin in Philadelphia. "You have to be honest all the time. If she could lie to us or hide that from us, how can we know she's telling the truth if she's experiencing things?''
One of two 'Ghost Hunters' spin-offs, 'Ghost Hunters Academy' features Gonsalves and Tango as they lead a charge of aspiring ghost hunting wannabes to find out whether they have what it takes to hunt for haunts.
AOL TV recently spoke with the pair about the new show, ghost hunters vs. mediums and other paranormal activity.
How do you guys feel about carrying the series? Are you good with that extra responsibility?
Dave: I was never in an authority position before, and I've gotten comfortable with it real fast. I was taught well in the paranormal field. It's a nice thing to share, the knowledge that I have, with the students.
Have you noticed a divide between ghost hunters and mediums?
Steve: When it comes to paranormal investigators there two schools: There are the metaphysical, the spiritualists, the mediums, the psychics and the empaths; all that stuff. Then there are the people who go in with -- not really science, but pseudo-science -- with those basic concepts of looking for facts and reason, and using the power of deduction, controlled studies and that sort of thing; and that's were we fall into. Until our show, that side was never really looked at. It was mostly the mediums, the psychics and all that stuff.
The first few segments feature the East Coast. Is there an East Coast vs. West Coast thing going on? Are the ghosts on the East Coast more interesting?
Steve: There's no East Coast-West Coast thing going on, and Dave is shaking his head no as well. I think that the East may have little more phenomena, as it was settled first. And we have St. Augustine, which was settled first, and we have New England, the first record of settling. And just that extra history adds more ghostly phenomena, and that may be why we see a little bit more of it on the East. But we've been in places out West that are truly haunted and really scary, just as we have on the East Coast.
What is the most important trait for these students to have going into this program?
Steve: There are five qualities that we look for, and that's honesty, respect...
Dave (in background): Composure.
Steve: Composure.
Dave (in background): Professionalism.
Steve: Professionalism, and skepticism ... Plus, we also look for passion. If you're not truly passionate about this field, you're going to fizzle out. There's a lot of hard work with very little payback. We can't have someone after six, seven months lose interest. We have to make sure people are passionate.
Dave: We don't want people to plateau and think this is it. It's an ongoing learning curve. You're always going to be learning.
Why do you think the whole country has suddenly become passionate about paranormal activity?
Steve: One thing I think that has grasped people about the paranormal is that until ['Ghost Hunters'], a lot of paranormal enthusiasts were, I don't want to use term zany, but a lot of them were guys who dressed a little outrageous and they didn't have any factual basis for what they were saying ... Our show came out with regular guys -- plumbers, cops, teachers -- regular people investigating, and they saw that we're thinking like the people who are watching these shows -- like, "Wait a second, it's probably not a ghost, it's probably just the wind. How come these investigators aren't looking into that?" We came with the skeptic point of view and that made it a lot more palatable for people who weren't quite believers.

Steve & Tango, i know of a place that would be really great for you guys to check out! they call it 'Kays grave'.when i heard of the place i had to see it. it is located in (i believe) russell springs, k.y. the story behind it keeps comin in different. but, it all starts with a father goin crazy and hackin up his daughter( nothin is ever said about his wife or other sibblings) and burying her up the road in the cemetary. when you pass the cemetary at night the angel mounts eyes,on the outside of it turn red and they watch you. if that wasnt sick enough, they say he would bury her and then a day or 2 later would unbury her and bring her back home! there isnt sapposed to be a headstone there for her either but there is a lonley headstone outside of the cemetary. i'm not sure what it says on it but with it bein by itself that is kind'da odd! there is a headstone inside the cemetary that says just'dad'. now the house itself...you see and hear things all through out the house but when you go upstairs things sound like they are fallin and you keep feelin cold breezes and all that stuff. down stairs before you open the door to go upstairs there is what looks like a blood-stain on the floor infront of the fireplace, that is boarded up. it's all really weird! get back to me and i will tell ya more. peace out, brenda c.

I doubt they will read your comment. After the bull@%$# Halloween episode a few years ago, these guys are full of crap, every single one of them. I have an entity in my house, and I wouldn't expose her to these jokers, never!

As a long time fan of GH, I was somewhat skeptical of GH Academy. I was concerned that it would be nothing more than a ratings gimmick, but decided to watch it anyway, and was sorry. I was disappointed and irritated with Steve and Dave, especially Steve. He seemed to be openly disdainful of Heathyr's psychic abilities, and sent her alone into the dungeon at Ft. Mifflin, which has always been against GH protocol. I was not convinced by his weak attempt to justify his actions, which was to state that they could watch her from “Command Central” in the event of a problem. To Heathyr’s credit, she ventured alone into the dungeon, and exhibited composure and poise throughout. Steve did not deign to compliment her on her performance, but was very quick to criticize the students’ mistakes throughout the investigation, with Dave nodding in agreement.
Additionally, his negative comments at the show's end were unnecessary and unfair. He criticized the members’ lack of investigative skills - is that not the point of the entire show? These individuals are there to learn the skills, and no one would expect them to be expert after one investigation. He also promised Susan he would not judge her, but his comments sounded very judgmental and biased, and he implied that the members were not up to GH standards, and would not make the grade. His behavior and comments were arrogant and inconsiderate.
Remember, it was not so long ago that Dave was a fledgling member; I am sure he made mistakes along the way, as well as Steve did when he was learning. I have seen more than one episode of GH when Dave and/or Steve made mistakes.
In other words, I believe they need to lighten up, not take themselves so seriously, and remember where they came from. After all, they were fortunate enough to have been given a break; it's time to return the favor. Give the students a chance to prove themselves; one investigation is not enough, and time will tell who is cut out for this and who is not.
As for me, I will just stick with watching GH, because I don't want to lose any more respect for Dave or Steve.

Well said! I absolutely agree 100%! I was so disappointed that I turned the television off and will not be watching another episode! It was pretty obvious from the start that these students were stooges to make Steve and Dave look good and it was more than obvious that Steve took an instant dislike to some more than others. Sorry guys, you will never be the next Jason and Grant. I will only watch GH in future.

Kathy,
As a medium and a rational thinker I do want to express that Steve and Daves reaction to a medium was correct. A foolish medium is one who doesn't want to learn information about a location and the empath should have been honest because what if it would have been a violent spirit that could have influenced her and that is not somethingthey need on the show to be honest. I would agree with them they are very untrained and didn't seem to grasp the seriousness of this show and things that can happen.
I feel sorry for the empath in what I am about to say but they are more vunerable to spirits and have an easier time being influence and even possesed by spirits that are not the most friendly. I think they are doing a great job, there is no schooling to learn from on how to teach this just their experience.
