Leonard Nimoy has both lived long and prospered, but now it looks like he may be moving to a new frontier: a world without acting.According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, Nimoy, who has appeared in three episodes of Fox's sophomore sci-fi drama 'Fringe', may be done with both the show and acting in general. Though he remains in discussions with series creator J. J. Abrams and showrunner Jeff Pinkner about continuing the role, Nimoy indicated some ambivalence about how the character has developed -- or rather, how he has not developed.
"They've asked me to do more, but we have to talk about where the character is going. So far my character, William Bell, and my appearances have been used to lay in information about this alternate universe and the experience of being in this other world," he said. "And that's OK, but I don't know yet what plans they have for really developing a dramatic story for the character. I'm waiting for a conversation about that."
Instead, Nimoy, who became famous for his role as Spock on the original 'Star Trek' series, seems to be more interested in focusing his energy on pursuits outside of acting, such as his upcoming photography exhibit at the Santa Monica Museum of Art. "As an actor you're always wondering when you're going to work again, who you're going to work with, what it will be. I don't have that consuming drive," he said, adding that photgraphy "is my creative outlet. This is what I do."
The loss of Nimoy from the cast would be just the latest to the struggling franchise, which has lost nearly 40 percent of its audience since last season; the 'Fringe' premiere netted 9.96 million viewers but just 5.96 million tuned in for the most recent episode. And for Nimoy, the sagging numbers may provide yet another reason to depart the series.
After all, staying on a sinking ship would simply not be logical.
