Terror, cold sweats, hot flashes and adrenalin shots may sound like last week's 'Grey's Anatomy' plotline, but these conditions also were on display at the Scream Awards, Spike TV's fourth annual fete of filmdom's best in science fiction and horror. Handed out at the Greek Theatre in L.A. on Oct. 17, the telecast airs on the network on Oct. 27 at 10PM EDT. We won't ruin the fun by giving a rundown of all the winners (though -- SPOILER ALERT! -- we do mention some), but here's a quick primer for tonight's telecast, with a few highlights that might make the show DVR-worthy.As usual, the night honored the gory and the gorgeous, with 'Twilight' and its sexy cast -- Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner -- up for a bevy of awards, including Best Fantasy Actor and Actress, Breakout Performance and Best Fantasy Film. When Lautner touted the upcoming 'Twilight' sequel 'New Moon' during the ceremony, the screaming young women in the house melted into green cheese.
Speaking of cheese, Megan Fox -- who won for Best Sci-Fi Actress for 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' -- used her acceptance speech to publicly apologize to director Michael Bay for recent comments in the media suggesting she had less than the utmost respect for his talents as a filmmaker and as a human being. Promoting the film last summer, Fox complained to CBS' 'Early Show' that Bay's latest edition of the 'Transformers' franchise could give migraines, then compared Bay to Hitler. On stage, she said, "I just want to be very clear that I've always felt I'm a very ordinary part of an extraordinary film." Backstage, presumably, someone wiped the rest of the egg off her face.
On the TV side, 'True Blood' nabbed a bevy of nominations, including Best TV Show and Best Actor and Actress nods for its on-and-off-screen romantic duo Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin. Meanwhile, Kate Bosworth gave the Best Villain award to Alexander Skarsgard, adding fire to rumors that the two have been hooking up on the set of their new movie 'Straw Dogs.'
The Scream Awards always sport scream-worthy moments. 'Star Trek' elicited one such yelp when it won the coveted Ultimate Scream -- at which point a certain portrayer of James T. Kirk (whose name begins with "W" and amy or may not end with "-illiam Shatner") emerged to accept on behalf of the film, launching into a typically meandering monologue. It was funny and frighening, whereas Keith Richards, clutching his Rock Immortal Award, merely frightened. The Comic-Con Icon Lifetime Achievement Award to Stan Lee (presented by Tobey Maguire) and Scream Mastermind Lifetime Achievement Award to George A. Romero (presented by Quentin Tarantino), added a final gloss to the night.
