The always outspoken Margaret Cho has tackled issues of race, sexuality and weight in her stand-up comedy, and she was the first Asian-American female to have a sitcom in the U.S., 1994's short-lived 'All-American Girl.' Over the years Cho's brash sense of humor and outspoken support of gay rights have earned her a devoted following. In the new Lifetime series 'Drop Dead Diva' (premieres Sunday, July 12), Cho plays the sidekick to a recently deceased model trapped in an overweight brainiac's body.
Cho talked to AOL TV about the ideals of beauty, why she thinks Miss California Carrie Prejean deserved to lose her crown and why she's saving her body for Kat Von D. -- By Katy Kroll
What about 'Drop Dead Diva' appealed to you?
I loved the script. I thought that it was a really interesting idea, because I think that a certain kind of beauty is valued more than other kinds, and that's a really harmful thing. To take a script that questions that beauty ideal and challenges it is very important. It's really close to what I do in stand-up, talking about body issues and beauty in an intelligent, funny and provocative way.
Do you think it's a fair depiction of what overweight women have to deal with?
Absolutely. What happens essentially in the show is that the lead character, Deb -- a thin, blonde girl -- basically goes from being visible to being invisible. For me, as a [former] fat person, the most painful part of being fat was being invisible. You're just not seen, which is so hard to deal with. I think for someone like Deb -- the traditional skinny, blonde model type -- once she becomes invisible, it's really a terrifying, horrifying experience. So I think showing that invisibility and talking about that invisibility is really authentic and real.

Which do you think is better to have: Beauty or brains?
Brains. I always think brains have it better all the time. I know people who were really beautiful for years and then they got old, and it's really frustrating because they become invisible and they can't handle it. Whereas I was never really looked at for beauty, so it never was an issue. I can get old and it doesn't matter, because it never was important to me.
If you could switch bodies with anyone, who would it be?
I don't think I would. But I do love Kat Von D's ink, so ... that would be great to have. I'd love to be totally tattooed like that. As an actor playing a more conservative role, I don't have the ability to tattoo my face like I would love to. But I'm saving a big area of skin for Kat Von D.
What do you think about the whole Prop 8 issue? It's very upsetting to me that California didn't repeal it. I've been working on [legalizing] gay marriage since 2004, and it's something that's very important to me. I was even deputized as a marriage commissioner and was able to perform weddings last year for gays and lesbians. So I feel disappointment in California, and disgust in the way they're handling this issue; it's making us look so bad. I'm glad Miss California got fired, because she was a major problem. I was proud that Perez Hilton really took her to task and asked the question that really pulled that bigotry out into the open. I'm just sick of ignorance, sick of homophobia and sick of hatred being written into legislation. It's really sad and horrifying.
Were you surprised that Miss California was actually stripped of her crown?
I didn't think they would do it. I thought they would gloss over it. I'm glad that they did take some responsibility, and it really is a step in the right direction, because ignorance and bigotry like that should not be glorified. It should not represent the state. I have my own issues with beauty contests -- that's a whole other discussion. [Laughs] To be that bigoted, to be that kind of ignorant and just terrible person really ... I'm Christian, and ignorance and bigotry are not Christian values. I think we'll look back on all this and be amazed at how hard we had to fight for it, because now we look back at laws against interracial marriage and think that's so backwards. Hopefully it will be the same way with gay marriage one day.

Margaret Cho is sooo funny. The bit she does about her mother and the bookstore is hilarious.

I used to like her until she started ranting about her issues. Especially the whole gay thing. I don't mind so much if someone is gay, but, I would just prefer they don't try to talk to me about their lifestyle. I mean, It's almost like trying to make PETA people see that rodeo events aren't cruelty to animals. But, perhaps I just don't see along the same lines as other people.

After being overweight for most of my life I learned about a combination of supplements that has brought me to the point where I look like everyone else. I'm not the fat girl any more. My kids don't have to put up with their friends making fun of me. And best of all, I'm much healthier and full of energy.First I take an incredible fat burning/detox/cleanse http://healthydietcleanse.info and along with that an amazing supplement that really suppresses my appetite and speeds up my metabolism. This isn't some phony acai berry "diet" product, this really works http://theworldsgreatestsupplement.com/ The result has been my dramatic weight loss.

I was lucky enough to never have been overweight in my life. That all ended after the birth of my second child. I got down to 20 pounds over my normal weight but no matter what I did I couldn't lose the rest. I didn't know if was age catching up with me or if somehow my metabolism changed. Whatever the reason, nothing was working. I tried all the bogus "diet" pills that we see all over the internet, but are just scams. All I ever lost with that stuff was money. One of my friends, knowing what I was going through, told me that she had been losing weight using a special plan http://bit.ly/FatLoss4You It laid out the facts in a way I never saw before and had easy to follow meal plans and diets. Not only have I lost the weight and kept it off but I'm leading a healthier lifestyle, mostly from the knowledge I gained from this amazing program.

I guess she is funny if you like your comedians shrill and political.
Personally,I wouldn't even go see her at a dog fight if she were the defending champ.

I have always liked Margaret. I have been fat, and I have been thin...looks fade and weight changes. I think it is far better in life to be smart. I do all I can to work on my weight issues and I think by being smart I am discovering what works for me.
I feel you need to try to change your day to day habits for best results. I tried Jenny Craig and Nutrisystem and found that I lost weight with both but when I stopped buying the food, I gained it all back, plus more!
What I find works best is being more aware on a day to day basis of your calories and eating a high fiber diet.
I am a also huge fan of fitflax http://www.fitflax.com that I started
eating only for weight loss, and found it also made my skin glow and my hair thicker and glossier. I recently lost 30 pounds by being more aware every day of how many calories I consume and making them
worthwhile calories. I have a low fat yogurt with golden roasted fitflax (nutty/low carb/low cal). It is a flax and chia blend and
was written about in O mag. It tastes nutty and does not need to be ground. They also listed a code to get 10% off. The code for 10% off
is fit10.
I also love butternut squash simply baked with a little coarse salt..it almost tastes like french fries
I know a man is not going to run to meet the smartest girl in the room, but what I value in myself and what I think works most in a sustained loving relationship is each partner valuing the other person's personality and what makes them unique. I know that just vainly I am happier with myself when I have my weight under control. I also feel better when I get regular exercise in as well.

I think she is so funny too...and I love that she is politically incorrect! I agree with Jess. I like staying in shape, but I value my brains over my body. Maybe because I didn't have a great body! I was obese all my life and have lost over 70 pounds in the last 3 years slowly by eating less and moving more. I talk a walk every day lunchtime now with a lunch I have prepared from home and not make a Micky D's run. I wear smartsole exercise insoles (they are like Sketchers shape up sneakers, but cost a lot less) http://www.smartsole.com They are insoles that you put in your flat shoes or sneakers that increase circulation and cause you to burn more calories with every step.

She doesn't like someone opposed to gay marriage representing CA, but I bet she voted for Barack who is against gay marriage and represents the entire country.

Homosexuality is wrong. You can't transfuse blood from a homosexual and the life span of a homosexual is half of a heterosexual. Look it up for yourselves folks. By promoting homosexuality, we are extincting our own society. That's as real as it gets. Think about it. Besides what kind of festivals do they have, nudity, sexual perversions in open public. Wake up, this is and always will be unexcepable behavior.

Whatever folks! She's an entertainer that's her job. Unless we missed a big piece of news where she got ordained or elected into office (ala Al Franken) People have a right to say whatever they especially when they are not representing or serving the public. Right or wrong in the end, we don't make the final judgement. Looking forward to the new show, though.
Kathy Griffin should make a guest appearance on it. She's another lost sitcom gem.
