Note: This is not a review, merely our first impression of an unfinished product. A show can go through many changes between the pilot stage and its official broadcast debut.
'Human Target'
Premise: In danger? Christopher Chance (Valley) can help you. As the title indicates, he's not really a superhero though ... just a daring man who'll stand between you and trouble. For a price, of course.
Cast: Mark Valley, Chi McBride, Jackie Earle Haley
What Works: After the abrupt cancellation of 'Pushing Daisies,' it's good to see McBride back on the small screen -- he's Winston, Chance's business partner. Sadly, Winston doesn't get any of the good lines or the action. That's all saved for blatantly twisted gunman Guerrero (Haley) and Chance. Now we know there's something dark and damaging in Chance's past ...
What Doesn't: ... but unfortunately, none of that is revealed in the pilot, rendering it sort of like 'The Bodyguard,' complete with that same awkward stiffness, but without any of the emotional music, motivation or chemistry. We're supposed to care if the Human Target gets hurt, aren't we?
Our Excitement Level (Out of 10): 4
Premiere Date: Sun., Jan. 7, 8PM ET on Fox
PREVIOUS: 'Community' Preview
